Monk strap shoes may seem like relatively modern classic models, however, its history dates back centuries and here’s a glimpse at its past.
No one knows for certain when or why the monk shoe was first developed, however, its wide adoption became widespread during Europe’s High Middle Ages (ca. 1000-1350 BC) when monks who traditionally wore sandals began wearing this style more frequently giving rise to its name. Monks used these shoes merely for work purposes as it offered more protection and comfort than sandals while its dual buckle design (even then there were double monk shoes) gave it a similar aesthetic as their usual sandals.
Since 1875, modern versions of both single and double monk strap shoes have gradually evolved over the last century. Single monks were traditionally more prevalent, yet in recent years two strap variants such as John Lobb William and Edward Green Westiminister’s two strap variant have become immensely fashionable. Some say Alexander McQueen and Yves Saint Laurent ushered this style trend in, while Lino Ieuluzzi, an Italian style icon and store owner who frequently wears it regularly is said to be at least partly responsible.
The formality level of monk shoes can be debated, and can vary depending on where in the world you live. In general, they tend to fall between less formal than oxfords but more formal than derbys, single black monk straps without brogeuing are considered relatively formal in England, where it’s often worn with dark suits for work purposes. Some might argue double monks (especially double monks ) may even be less formal than derbies though what’s true may depend on several factors, for instance the darker colors with cleaner patterns being more formal overall.
